Cialdini’s 6 principles
Cialdini gives six principles of influence are as follows: Reciprocity: If I do a task for you then you must do what I ask of you. Scarcity: If I can’t possess it, I want it more. Liking: If you appreciate me then you have more of a chance to do what I ask of you. Authority: If you act and appear like somebody in authority then I will follow you. Social proof: If we are ignorant of what to do we look to other people. Commitment/consistency: If I declare something I will likely act in a manner consistent with that declaration. Moreover, Cialdini spends a considerable amount of the book speaking about how to protect yourself from these factors of persuasion & influence. Speaking of protection, one of his major points may seem low key. These influences are only unethical if used in a false manner. If used in truth they are valuable ways to persuade people. Therefore, if you’re not using these principles already, you may need to consider how using these influences can be to your benefit in fighting unethical practices used against you. These influences are everywhere. Just look around you. Certainly you cannot identify all these factors. It’s insightful to know how most individuals proclivities as they make decisions.
